What do YOU want for your future? Does the thought of the future give you excitement, purpose and meaning?
I used to spend so much time reacting and responding to everyone else that my life had no direction, purpose or meaning. Other people's lives, problems, and wants set the course for my life. Once I realized it was okay for me to think about and identify what I wanted, remarkable things began to take place in my life. -Anonymous
When people would ask me what I wanted, I did not know how to respond. What came to my mind were the things I wanted for my children, and the people I cared about. I had no idea what I WANTED for ME. I was so used to “caring” for others, and meeting others’ needs that I seldom thought about what I needed and wanted. Sounds selfless, doesn’t it? It wasn’t selfless but clueless. It took a long time to figure out that it was actually a cowardly way to live. I was not deliberately living my life but accepted the scraps of what life had to offer. I had to take a journey backwards to go forwards – and that took more time than I wanted, but it was a worthwhile journey. Through that process, I learned what was truly important to me, what I needed to refuel my spirit, hopes and aspirations. I learned what and how I want to look back on my life on my last breath on earth. That may sound like a morbid statement to some reading this, but that exercise was actually a life-giving one that gave me a sense of direction, purpose and meaning as I began "writing" my future, rather than vicariously living it through others.
